ALIA Graphic June Roundup 2022

At ALIA Graphic, we are always excited to share comic-related news, especially when it comes to Australian creators.

This month, we caught up with Australian author Bruce Mutard ahead of the Perth Comic Arts Festival and Comic Arts Awards of Australia for our monthly podcast, and also have news and details of the the Comic Arts Awards shortlist. You can listen to our episode with Bruce through Apple Podcasts hereTo put it simply, we can't wait for awards announcements in August!

We have also compiled a bunch of interviews with prolific creators such as Mariko Tamaki and Tillie Walden, as well as up-and-coming creators, such as the duo behind new young adult graphic novel, Slip by writer Marika McCoola and artist Aatmaja Pandy. If that wasn't enough, No Flying No Tights' comics librarians have you covered with what to say if and when you are ever faced with the 'graphic novels aren't real books' argument. While this article is primarily focused on school libraries, it shares interesting resources, collection development tips and tricks, and insightful discussion to counter the old hesitation around graphic novels. Whether you are reading for pleasure, to appreciate art, or to gain deeper understanding into a topic, we believe graphic novels and comics can be a big part of anyone's learning and development.

What to expect at PCAF and the CAAA

Logo of the Perth Comic Arts Festival

The first weekend of August the Perth Comic Arts Festival will be taking place and it's going to be bigger than ever with about 85 comic book creators from W.A. and across Australia tabling and presenting their comics on the market day, on Sunday 7 August.

But that's not all, on Saturday, there will be plenty of panel talks and workshops.

Best of all, entry to PCAF will be totally free!

On the Saturday, as part of PCAF, the Comic Arts Awards of Australia will also be presented. These are Australia's most important awards, celebrating excellence in Australian comics.

Entry is also free for the ceremony and if you attend in person you also get one of the very special and highly cherished CAAA annuals outlining all the awarded comics and creators.

We had a chat with Bruce Mutard and he told us what to expect from the festival. The episode is out now on our Apple Podcasts feed here

Celebrating Pride Month

It’s Pride Month and we highly recommend all library workers who are interested to get involved with ALIA Rainbow, a new special interest group dedicated to facilitating networking, support, professional development and resources for LGBTQIA+ library people and allies. Check out their details and join their eList.

At ALIA Graphic we’re celebrating Pride Month in a couple of ways.

Of course, we have our Pride themed Graphic Novel Club this month, on Thursday June 23 at 8pm AEST, where we’ll be discussing three excellent graphic novels with LGBTQIA+ themes. Check out the details and how to join our online graphic novel club here.

We also wanted to recommend graphic novels by LGBTQIA+ creators, as we believe graphic novels are fantastic vehicles for representation and recognition. So here’s a list of some of our favourites and some recent releases for Pride Month.
