About

ALIA Graphic Novels and Comics is intended to be a resource and network for library and information professionals who are responsible for and/or interested in comics and graphic novels. The group aims to  support library staff interested in all aspects of collection development, advocacy and programming related to graphic novels and comics.  

The group is inspired by the great work being done by the ALA Graphic Novels and Comics Roundtable.

Purpose and Goals

  • To promote comics and graphic novels to libraries, allied institutions and professionals within the GLAMR sector, with a particular focus on Australian titles and creators
  • To collate new graphic novels releases and publish a monthly roundup of recommended titles for libraries
  • The creation and sharing of news and resources related to graphic novels in libraries
  • To provide networking and PD opportunities for library staff
  • Develop and carry out advocacy around comics as a medium, including educational, literacy and engagement benefits
  • To connect and build bridges with Australian creators and graphic novels publishers
  • To establish a relationship of mutual benefit with the Ledger Awards (the awards for excellence in Australian comics)

Comic creators  

We try to stay informed and share information about Australian comics and graphic novels. If we've missed yours, please do let us know. Just bear in mind that we mainly focus on graphic novels and trade paperbacks that are suitable for libraries (libraries don't buy floppies/single issues). 

Also, while some libraries are more flexible than others, library services usually only buy from library suppliers and, occasionally specialist comics shops. Writer/artist Queenie Chan wrote a great post with some helpful tips to get your book added to library suppliers. Of course, if you're published by a big publisher this happens automatically.

 If you're a complete indie and you have a book without ISBN number and without any form of distribution, you could drop in to your local library and speak to a librarian. Libraries will usually be quite supportive of local creators. Again some libraries are more flexible than others and be aware that libraries have a collection development policy that they must adhere to.
